10 essential things to experience elsewhere in Southern Africa
South africa has a lot to offer, whilst one or two weeks would be enough to experience it all, we have put together the 10 best things to do in South Africa during your stay.
1. Spend time in the winelands of Franshoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl. Wonderful scenery, food and wine. A week could easily slip by but not easy on the waistline.
2. Fly to Durban, drive through Zulu territory and visit the battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. Best of all stay with the Fugitives Drift people and hear battle stories that will make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. History brought vividly to life. www.fugitives-drift-lodge.com
3. Visit the Kruger National Park. A different safari experience to Tanzania and Kenya and either design your own itinerary or stay in posh lodges with very knowledgeable guides. This site is excellent www.krugerpark.co.za
4. Drive the Garden Route from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town but just don’t rush it.
5. Tour the mountain kingdom of Lesotho in a 4 x 4 and see dramatic scenery as well as a glimpse of what southern Africa was once like. Then exit down the rugged Sani pass (not for the faint hearted) and enjoy the luxury of the South African Drakensburg lodges.
6. Take in Blyde River Canyon with magnificient scenery and also take time to visit Swaziland. Keep your fingers crossed for a thunder storm-a memorable experience in the area.
7. Experience the semi arid Karoo and the Oudtshoorn ostrich farms.
8. Go to Langebaan, Western National Park see the birdlife.
9. See the flowers in Namaqualand in September and visit the Augrabies Falls National Park.
10. Take time (a lot of time) to visit Namibia. A vast country with two deserts, mountain ranges, wildlife everywhere and great people.
